Using the tune of 'Bobby Shaftoe' a well known sea shanty I created this short song about the infamous 'Long John Silver.' Rhythmic skills could be practised by clapping and tapping in the first section then twizzing round with a partner in the middle section. Whatever you do I'm sure the children will love it and it will add another dimension to a topic on 'Pirates' or 'The Sea.'

A song inspired by my Grandson Harry and his love for his toy giraffe. The song has a lazy swing and relays how having extremely long legs does not make running and walking easy. As I researched this song I found out that when giraffes walk, they move both legs on one side of their body and then both legs on the other side and when they run unlike dogs for example their back legs go outside of their front legs. All fascinating stuff which led to the lyrics in the chorus. Actions would enhance this song greatly and why not get the children to get down on all fours and emulate the walking and running movements of a giraffe themselves. They will love it. A charming fun song with a simple melody where the lyrics tell of the animals that actually hibernate during winter in this country. This would be a perfect addition to a topic on winter or seasons. Additional activities could include learning about and categorizing the animals using musical instruments or simply choosing suitable rhythmic patterns to accompany the melody. A sweet song inspired by the joy my grandson has watching the birds out of the window on the feeders during winter and one of my favourite songs of all times 'Feed the Birds' from Mary Poppins. I hope you and your children enjoy this song which could be a prelude to many other activities musical and otherwise whilst you explore 'Winter' as a topic. There's plenty of opportunity for actions and movement in the chorus too.

A fun counting song which would make a great addition to a Spring or Easter Topic. The song tells of Mrs Chicken sitting on her eggs and almost being surprised as each chick comes along. You could use this in your maths sessions too and children will love performing the actions contained within the lyrics.

This song was written for Joss Innocent Landers of St Joseph's R.C. Primary School in Hertford. Joss is a really experienced Nursery Teacher and was desperate for a new Alphabet Song having become heartily sick of the 'Twinkle, Twinkle' American Song that ends with the sound 'Zee' and not 'Zed' as we say in England. I've included a chorus with a simple hand jive so the children can practise their rhythmic skills as well as having lots of fun.

A sweet song about an evaporating snowman introducing a touch of science into the proceedings! Children will love the humour in the song as the snowman's eyes pop out and his ears disappear but hopefully the children will not get too sad as the last line of the song says 'But we will build another snow mate next cold and snowy day!' Why not create compositions inspired by this exploring diminuendo? Working in groups each child could play their instruments altogether then gradually drop out to paint a musical picture of the snowman disappearing as their music gets quieter and quieter. The possibilities for other activities inspired by this song are endless making it a good addition to your Primary School School Music Resources.

A pretty song in 3/4 time about two great winter treats for lucky children. Pop up Ice Rinks mean that many more children these days can experience the thrills of ice skating and of course a nice warm Hot Chocolate Drink afterwards. The adjectives in the chorus will provide fun for the children as they try to emulate the sound of the words and the flow of the music lends itself to perhaps creating a class dance and original pieces of music depicting skating in 3/4 time. A fun Easter/Spring song where the lyrics tell of painting eggs then rolling them down a hill and having an Easter Egg treasure hunt in the garden but then reveal that our favourite traditional Easter treat are chocolate eggs wrapped in foil! The chorus also discusses other seasonal signs of spring. Why not create a dance to accompany the chorus to practise the children's rhythmic skills and use instruments to accompany the verse. A fun harvest song written for a Year 1 class (but suitable for the whole of KS1) when the teacher wanted to explore the processed food angle in a Harvest Assembly. This fun and unusual harvest song explains how we can all enjoy the fruits of the harvest all the year round. The humorous nature of the lyrics and accompaniment fills the children with glee and the song could be the starting point for many related musical activities. Also available from my website.

A fun song written for a Reception class to be performed with actions and instruments to enhance their assembly about ‘Chinese New Year.’ but it would be suitable for the whole of KS1. The actions are contained in the lyrics of the song and tuned percussion were used to create melodic ostinati. The children really loved creating a fan dance to the backing track in between the two verses.

A fun song written for a nursery class to perform at their harvest festival assembly. The children stamped their feet and played claves to accompany the song. The song provided a starting point for many other activities and would be a good resource for the whole of KS1.

A fun song/rap written for a Nursery class to be performed with actions, props, claves and instruments linking with their topic on ‘Chinese New Year’. We performed this at an assembly with a blue cloth river, animal masks and instruments and the parents loved it. It would be suitable for the whole of KS1 and could be a stimulus for a whole host of activities from the use of ordinal numbers, to dance, to mask making as well as all the obvious musical activities.

A fun song with an echo re-telling the traditional Red Riding Hood Story written for a Year 2 class and their dance/gymnastic/mime assembly. Extension activities include creating music for the main characters in the story and composing using graphic notation and exploring major and minor keys.

A fun song written for a Year 1 class (but suitable for K.S.1) linked to their topic on ‘Light and Dark.’ The song explores louds and softs in music leading to the children creating their own Day and Night music and many other musical activities around the topic. Why not create a dance using black and yellow scarves or strips of crepe paper.

The sung chorus and first verse of a thought provoking song/rap written for a year 6 class to tie in with their topic on W.W.2. The children were amazing creating and performing their own verses and this paved the way for many other musical activities. The activity would be suitable for the whole of K.S.2.

Written as an additional solo opportunity to add to the amazing ‘Edith’s Wartime Scrapbook’ written by Mick Riddell and published by ‘Edgy Productions’. (I highly recommend this as an end of term production.) The song works as a stand alone song too for KS2 to tie in with a topic on ‘War.’ Extension activities include creating a piece using a melodic ostinato and writing topical songs and raps.

This song with sound effects was written for a reception class to perform after their walk into their local town. The children created actions and selected sound sources to accompany the song then composed a piece of music in Rondo form painting a musical picture of their journey. The song would be suitable for the whole of K.S.1 and could be the starting point for many other activities.
